If your trip waste bath tub drain is leaking or you are changing your trip waste bath tub drain. You need 1 1/2 rubber coupling to connect PVC to copper or galvanized, or 1 1/2 PVC coupling if it is PVC to PVC and glue and primer for PVC. Also a 1 1/2 PVC trap, small piece of 1 1/2 PVC pipe, screw driver, plumbers putty, trip waste, a hacksaw if it is PVC , or an electric sawzall if the drain pipe is copper or galvanize pipe.
Get to the trip waste under the tub, open up a ceiling or what ever you have to do to expose the trip waste bath tub drain. Next cut the piping a couple of inches, just before the pipe meets the trap of the trip waste bath tub drain. Next remove the screws from the over flow face plate of the trip waste bath tub drain. Next there is a tool to take the part of the trip waste bath tub drain where the water would go out of the tub, it's called the shoe of the trip waste bath tub drain. Most of the time, the tub drain tool doesn't work. You have to cut out the shoe of the trip waste bath tub drain. Eather from in the tub, cut two slits with the sawzall and chip it out with a small chisel or cut the shoe out from under the tub.
Take the old trip waste and match it exactly the same size as the new trip waste bath tub drain. Now the trip waste is the same size and you are ready to put it in. Put the plumbers putty on the on the part of the trip waist shoe, that screws down into the shoe from the top. Next screw the face plate into the top of the trip waste where the over flow is in the tub.
Next we to hook up the drain, there is a tail piece that comes with the trip waste bath tub drain. Screw this into the bottom of the trip waste, sometimes it is not long enough, so you have to get a extension tale piece. Next take the PVC trap you purchased and measure it from the back of it after you put it on the tail piece. Cut a small piece of PVC to where it would meet the cut pipe and eather use the rubber coupling or glue a PVC coupling to make the connection. Make sure on all the nuts, you use some kind of sealer, pipe dope or liquid Teflon. This will help for no leaks. After you put it all together run the hot water and tighten all the nuts again, they will tighten again a little more after the washers soften.
