If you are trying to fix your toilet from running water from the tank into the bowl. They annoying flushing noise at night while you are sleeping. First thing is lift the lid of the toilet tank. Make sure the rubber flapper that goes up and down on the chain from the handle is replaced. That will make your toilet flush on its own.

If the toilet still runs after you change the flapper, you need to check where the flapper lands on. If it is a brass flush valve you can try to use sand paper to smooth the brass down. This is because the brass from being in the water gets worn down and gets chips in it. You have to smooth the brass surface down. That stops a lot of mid night flushing. If it is a newer toilet and doesn't have a brass flush valve. If it is a brass ball cock ( fill valve) the ball on the arm, bend the arm down. This means two much water may be in the toilet. If it is a plastic ball cock ( fill valve ) there is always an adjustment on the plastic fill valve.

If you need to change the ball cock get a no burst supply and a ball cock. Remove the old one from under the tank where the water comes in. To change the ball cock ( a trick ) put your hand on top of the ball cock and bottom and push up on the ball cock with your palm and you don't have to remove the water in the tank. Put the new ball cock and push down. Put nut on hook up no burst supply to water on off valve and you are on you way. No more mid night flushing.
