The Texel Guinea Pig is one of the latest guinea pig breeds. The Texel Guinea Pig breed originated in England during the last part of the nineteenth century. The Texel Guinea Pig breed is the outcome of the crossing of a Silkie Guinea Pig and a Rex Guinea Pig breed. In 1998, the Texel Guinea Pig breed was introduced in the United States, and it was recognized by the Cavy Breeders Association of America.

Features

The Texel Guinea Pig breed has the same appearance of a Silkie Guinea Pig breed, but in place of straight hair, the Texel Guinea Pig has curls. The whole body of the Texel Guinea Pig breed is sheltered with hair, and it occasionally has a natural part in the middle of the back. The face of this breed has shorter hairs, and there can or cannot be longer curls beneath the lower jaws and the ears of the animal.

The Texel Guinea Pig has a small size body with a wide, round head. Sometimes, these Texel Guinea Pigs can have a Satin coat, which is a coat that is shinier and denser than that of the regular Texel coat. As these breeds are mostly kept indoors, they do not need frequent bathing and it is enough if they are bathed once in a month.

Diet

The Texel Guinea Pig is fed with the same diet as other guinea pig breeds in the captive. They are usually fed with the Timothy hay, fresh water, and vitamin C pellets, together with a varied vegetable diet.

The average lifespan of the Texel Guinea Pig ranges from 4 years to 7 years.
