Facts about Sloughi Hound Dogs, "Scientific name for Sloughi Hound Dog, or domestic canine, is Canis lupus familiaris". The Sloughi Hound Dog breed is sometimes called the Arabian Greyhound or Sloughi Moghrebi. The Sloughi is a sight hound, bred in North Africa. They hunt primarily by sight, not smell, hence the genre’s name “sight houndâ€.
History
This is an ancient breed, most closely related to the Azawakh. The Sloughi Hound Dog was bred in North Africa from Morocco to Libya by the Bedouin. They were used to hunt desert foxes, rabbits, gazelles, ostrich and even hyena. Today, the Sloughi Hound Dog are sometimes used to protect herds from jackal. The Sloughi Hound Dog were treated as a member of the family, whereas most dogs were considered as impure and untouchable by Muslim owners.
The Sloughi Hound Dog was recognized by the FCI in 1935. The breed was first brought to the United States in 1973. An American Sloughi Association was founded in 1989. The breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club but it is rare in the United States. The Sloughi Hound Dog are classified as hounds by American clubs.
Physical Characteristics
This is a lop eared sight hound. The Sloughi Hound Dog have excellent vision and light amber eyes. They readily chase anything that moves. The Sloughi Hound Dog are two to two and half feet tall (60.9 to 76.2 cm) at the shoulder. The Sloughi Hound Dog is bred for the desert. They do not like being wet. They do not have a thick enough coat for cold climates. The Sloughi Hound Dog coats range from cream to red, which may or may not have black markings. A few have white patches on the chest. Their skulls are not as narrow as those of other sight hounds. Some Sloughi Hound Dogs have one extra pre-molar 1. Their ears are erect but droop on the top.

Disposition
Sloughi Hound Dogs are often used as watch dogs. They are cautious and slow to warm up to strangers. However, the Sloughi Hound Dog are very protective of their owners if socialized well to the family. Those socialized well to its owner will read the owner’s mood to decide whether or not to attack a stranger. The Sloughi Hound Dog raised in kennels as hunting dogs will be nervous when dealing with people and may snap when scared.
The Sloughi Hound Dogs are best trained with positive reinforcement. Avoid physical punishment.
The Sloughi Hound Dogs do not change owners easily. It is best to present a puppy to a new owner away from the mother.

Care
These hunting dogs need a lot of time to run. Sloughi Hound Dogs that are bored will find things to hunt or will look for this to rip up. Keep the Sloughi Hound Dog on a leash on walks or they’ll run off, chasing prey.

Progressive retinal atrophy does exist. Sloughi Hound Dogs are sensitive to anesthesia and medications, so space out vaccines and worming medications.
