Ruger Number One
Category: Shotguns and Smoothbores
Ruger Number One is designed to finish the kill in a single shot, making it a favorite of generations of American hunters. The Ruger #1 was designed by Ruger after discussing the idea with friends Jack O’Connor, Lenard Brownell and Robert Chatfield-Taylor. The goal of the design was to create a stylish weapon that mimicked Victorian aesthetics at an affordable price. Lenard Brownell was invited by Ruger to build the new rifle.
The Ruger Number One was designed in 1965, with the assistance of Larry Larson and Harry Sefried. The first gun was built in 1966. The first receivers were marked “Number 1â€, and this later became the model’s name. The first gun’s serial number, though, was 935. The Ruger Number One is considered by some the first modern single shot rifle; its success led to copycats like the Dakota 10, Remington Custom Shop Number 1 and Thompson/Center Encore.
Ruger Number One was designed to be better than the Farquharson single shot rifle, though it was not based on that design. It has a 26†barrel, like the .308 Winchester, except with a semi-beavertail forearm. It is more compact than older single-shot rifles. The hammer is positioned low and centrally on the receiver. It has a breechblock that moves up and down inside the receiver. The design consolidates parts, such as making the hanger an anchor point for the ejector spring. The safety is located on the top tang. The falling block of a Ruger #1 is very short. Because the Ruger #1 is a premium weapon, most of the guns have walnut wood stocks.
By 1967, there were three variations for sale: the S22L lightweight, the S26M with a 26†medium barrel and an S24H heavy barrel.
The design evolved through the late 1960s. In 1971, the Ruger #1 became available in five variations: 1-A, 1-B, 1-S, 1-V and 1-H. The 1-A is a light sporter, a 22 inch barrel. The 1-S is a medium sporter, with a 26 inch barrel. The 1-H or Tropical Rifle has a 24†heavy barrel. The 1-B and 1-V have wider, longer fore-arms, and they can be used with a Harris bipod. The Ruger 1B .270 has a full sized fore-end equipped with a quarter rib to accept a scope ring. The lack of a long repeating action makes this gun around four inches shorter than equally powerful bolt action rifles. All versions of the gun except stainless steel versions have a black recoil pad, sculpted receiver and quarter rib barrel.
The single shot rifle is sometimes favored by hunters because they must make their one shot count. They make sure they cannot miss because it takes time to reload, though the process is fast and easy with the Ruger Number one.
The gun is loaded and unloaded by pressing a lever catch and pushing the action lever down to lower the breechblock. At this point, you can put in another shell before sweeping the lever and locking the bullet in place. Repeat the actions to remove the fired round. The falling block can be loaded and re-loaded very quietly compared to other rifles.
Ruger has added several more variations to the Ruger Number One line. The Ruger Number 1-RSI International has a 20†barrel and Mannilicher style forearm. The K1 Stainless has a stainless steel barrel, gray laminated wood stock and black recoil pad for a dark, metallic look. written by: tamarawilhite Ruger Number One is designed to finish the kill in a single shot, making it a favorite of generations of American hunters.
