The Puli Dog is an ancient breed which was carried by the Magyars into Hungary many years ago. The Puli Dogs were used by the Magyars as sheep dogs since many of the shepherds preferred black dogs because they could easily be spotted among the flock of sheep. The Puli Dog was the droving and herding dog. It was light and fast. During World War II, the breed almost died out with it numbers reducing to two. However, controlled breeding gave rise to the survival of the Puli Dog breeds.
The average height of the male Puli Dog to the shoulders is 16 to 17 inches (40.6 to 43.2 cm) and the average height of the female is 14½ to 16 inches (36.8 - 40.6 cm). The average weight of the male 25 to 35 pounds (11.3 to 15.8 kg) and the average weight of the females 20 to 30 pounds (9 to 13.6 kg).Puli Dog has a fine-boned, square looking, fairly-masculine, compact body with a unique coated coat. Puli Dogs round to dome-shaped head appears egg-shaped from sides and round from in front. Puli Dogs ears are medium in size with a black pigment and eye dark brown in color and almond-shaped. The Puli Dog can also survive various climatic conditions like the heat of Florida and Australia or the colder areas of Denmark. Some of them, but not all, can swim perfectly in water.
Puli dogs are a hardy type of breed. There just a few known health problems associated with the breed such as Hip Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia and (PRA) Progressive Retinal Atrophy . It can live up to over twelve years.
