Facts about the Percula Clownfish. The Percula Clownfish is full of interesting facts. This Percula Clownfish which is also known as Eastern Clown Anemonefish, Orange Clownfish and Percula Anemonefish does well in warm water. The Percula Clownfish which can be found in the reef has a close cousin that is called the False Percula Clownfish. They look similar in shape and size but the Percula Clownfish has ten spines close to its fin while the other fish has 11 spines. Also, this Percula Clownfish has a social system that is quite unique. The Female Percula Clownfish is usually the largest in any group where you find these fishes.

There is a term used for these fish and it is called Protandry. This simply means that the fish is born male but they easily switch to female breeders if the Female in their group dies. The chain of the Percula Clownfish goes in this manner: They have a female Breeder which is the largest in body size, followed by a Male breeder and about 0-4 non-male breeders. As the hierarchy in this fish descends, they get smaller in body size. It is not clear the role the non male breeders play but it has been observed that they have a greater chance to climb in their group hierarchy than an outsider does.

Interestingly, the Percula Clownfish can live for a reasonably long time if it is well taken care of. The Percula Clownfish can live for about 12 years and continue to reproduce till it dies. However, the Percula Clownfish can sometimes be aggressive towards members of its group. This can be as a result of various reasons. One of the reasons could be the need to become a dominant member of the group especially if it has a larger body size than the leader. Also, they have unique courting rituals that the male has to undergo before he can mate with the female.

Based on the unique composition of the Percula Clownfish, it is able to emit venom to protect itself. This is used in defense against common predators that try to harm it.
