History
Jeep makes off-road vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler that are inspired by the Willys jeeps that helped move men during World War 2, though those vehicles were made by AMC (American Motor Company). However, the Jeep line is made by Fiat Chrysler. The first Jeep Wranglers were made in 1986. The Jeep Cherokee was first made in 1984, though the vehicle was at risk of being retired by the early 2000s. Jeep tried to roll out the Jeep Liberty as a small SUV, but that vehicle did not generate much interest, so they redesigned the Jeep Cherokee instead. The second generation of the Jeep Cherokee was released in 2014.
Design
The Jeep Cherokee has a similar silhouette to the Jeep Wrangler, but it is fully enclosed and designed for day to day driving, not off-road adventures.
The Jeep Cherokee Sport is the base model. The next version is the Jeep Cherokee Latitude. The Limited is more expensive than the Latitude. The Trailhawk is the next in features and price.
Performance
The Jeep Cherokee has a nine speed automatic transmission.
The Jeep Cherokee can go over moderate rocks and has a 56:1 crawl ratio. The Jeep Cherokee can go through water as deep as twenty inches.
All Jeep Cherokees have a 2.4 liter engine, 184 horsepower as the standard. The maximum towing weight of the Jeep Wrangler is 2,000 pounds, including both trailer and load. Upgrading to a 3.2 liter 271 horsepower V-6 engine increases the towing capacity to 4,500 pounds.
Trailer sway dampening and electronic roll mitigation is standard. Remote start capability is optional in the Trailhawk and standard in the Limited edition.
The Jeep Cherokee was rated marginal in the 2015 IIHS small overlap crash tests.
The Jeep Cherokee gets 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. According to Consumer Reports, the Jeep Cherokee averaged 22 miles per gallon.
The 2015 version of the Jeep Cherokee went zero to sixty in just under seven seconds and has a top speed of 119 miles per hour.
The European version of the Jeep Cherokee has a diesel power train.
Price
The basic package of the Jeep Cherokee cost $23,000 in 2015.The Jeep Cherokee Latitude started at $25,000. The Limited was priced at $29,000 in 2015. The Trailhawk was priced at around $30,000 for the basic version.
In general, the higher priced Jeep Cherokees have larger wheels. The more expensive Limited has optional features in other models as standard like a powered river’s seat, heated seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheels, and dual zone temperature control. Six speakers are standard but the “Uconnect†entertainment/infotainment system is standard in the more expensive packages.
